The Trickery of Ryan Bingham

Posted by    |    January 26th, 2011 at 1:06 pm

Facebook is a labyrinth of untruths. A tip off from a friend suggested that Academy Award winner and sexpot, Ryan Bingham, would be performing at The Green Elephant Tuesday night. What? You ask. Why is he not performing at a bigger venue? We riddled ourselves the same question.

The Green Elephant is a vacuous wasteland, aside from Thursday nights between the hours of 11pm-2am respectively, depending on what time they kick the college kids out.

My friends and I checked the Facebook invite that seemingly professed a fact: we would be hearing The Weary Kind about 10 feet away from our eardrums in mere hours. We headed to our former college party scene with hopes of hearing the acclaimed 29-year-old’s whiskey drenched vocals.

While opening band Marc Ford’s Fuzz Machine was actually quite good, come 11pm, we were wondering where Mr. Bingham was. (more…)

Young Frankenstein at The Winspear Opera House

Posted by    |    January 21st, 2011 at 4:52 pm

If Blazing Saddles is one of your favorite movies, and there’s only one man who would ever dare give you the raspberry, Young Frankenstein, now playing at The Winspear Opera House, is for you. The stage adaptation of Mel Brooks’ 1974 movie strategically weaves current events and pop culture references into the plot line and, the voices of Janine Divita, playing the role of Elizabeth, and Christopher Ryan, playing the role of Frankenstein, are tremendous. Synthia Link, the busty Inga’s, accent whilst singing was a little lacking, but her energy was electric. I totally recommend this show for a fun evening Downtown. However; the lights in Transylvania are quite bright and flash frequently, so if you are epileptic, pass this up and just wait for Billy Elliot. Young Frankenstein will close this Sunday, January 23.

Bulls’ Night Out, or how to become overly aware of your nasal passage

Posted by    |    January 21st, 2011 at 1:53 pm

I spent Wednesday night in a place PETA members would liken to Hades. No, not a fur coat factory. It was the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. With box seats and a VIP parking pass, we rolled up with stellar parking and were treated like we just handed the maître’d a $20 (I would say $50, but you have to factor in the level of class at an event where bandanas are considered acceptable attire). Joe Satriani Sets Granada on Fire: Simultaneously Causes Hundreds of Guitarists to Quit Playing

Posted by    |    January 19th, 2011 at 11:49 pm

Joe Satriani at Granada in Dallas, TXI had never seen Joe live before last night.  Being a guitar player for 16 years, I definitely knew his stuff and his story.  Having taught other guitar phenoms such as Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett, and Primus’ Larry LaLonde among others, Joe is no slouch on the six string.  During interviews, he has alluded to practicing 12 hours a day; running arpeggios, practicing chord voicings,  and working on his silky smooth legato technique.

And it shows.

And it makes me want to quit guitar.
