Sneaky

“If you’ve ever watched CMT between the hours of 3 and 4 am, you might have seen this music video. Or if you’re a night nurse, or work at Waffle House, you might have seen it too.” The Rich O’Toole Band embraces their status as an up-and-coming act that hasn’t yet had appropriate airtime. They are opening for Rodney Atkins at the Granada Theater, and the plaid-clad crowd is singing along and Jersey Shore fist-pumping to lyrics that resound their life experiences.

Their energy is contagious, and even though I retired my love of country music years ago, (the California kid in me pretends that Lady Danville and the Silversun Pickups are much cooler) I am an instant fan. And it doesn’t hurt that lead singer Rich is a sexy beast.

I’ve only been in line for three minutes and sweat is already dripping down my spine. Thank you, Dallas heat. It’s 7 pm at the House of Blues and the doors are opening for Pat Benatar, rock goddess and 80’s legend. The smell of popcorn is alluring and people are loading up on 24oz Miller Lights and test tube shots reminiscent of the paint scene from Miss Congeniality. Pat has hours before she will rock the stage.

I’m here early to acquire a prime eavesdropping location (this is a new experience for me; as I am late for everything, especially concerts). Me, I prefer to show up late and push my way to the front—I can’t stand in high heels forever. But this is a different crowd, and fortunately, Jessica Simpson has pampered my feet with concert-friendly flats. (more…)

Shock and Awe

Posted by    |    August 12th, 2010 at 11:15 pm

We just returned from watching Pat Benatar and her hubby, Spyder blow our hair back at the House of Blues tonight.

Pat was on it tonight and I loved her performance.  But her hubby, Neil Spyder Giraldo… man!  This guy is the best of the best guitar players, period. He also produces and arranges most of Pat’s records. Neil rocked his signature GMPs and other guitars as well. I will literally and figuratively be up all night.

I leave it to fellow YouPlus music aficionados Gio and Laura to post pics and more details.

Sneak peak at Dallas CASA Parade of Playhouses

Posted by    |    August 5th, 2010 at 5:00 pm

With their tiny nooks and crannies, some with welcoming flower boxes abundant with blooms, others outfitted with window shutters reminiscent of an old country farm house… the mini homes on display by Dallas CASA are any child’s dream come true.

That’s exactly for what they’ve been made.

Dallas CASA (Court appointed special advocates) is a thirty-year-old organization that advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected children in protective care, to help them find safe, permanent homes.

The group, along with NorthPark Center, hosts a parade of playhouses each year to raise public awareness about child abuse. The two-week Parade, this year sponsored by ORIX Corporation, invites visitors to NorthPark to purchase raffle tickets for chances to win one of the custom-built playhouses. The raffle tickets run $5; if you purchase $50 worth, you could also win 4 round trip Southwest Airlines tickets.

To kick-off the play house parade, CASA’s Young Professionals group will host a happy hour TONIGHT, 6:30 p.m. August 5, at Cibus restaurant just below the AMC theatre. Non-member entry costs $20, and will earn you one drink and one raffle ticket. Give $50 and you will become a Young Professionals official member while supporting a great cause.
